Calling the 2011 Summer

It’s officially spring and what I’m wondering is what will the 2011 Hamptons summer season bring from a rudeness rating?

Right about now the renters are taking their tours with realtors to find their dream rental home and the owners are getting their estates all gussied up.

Realtors please share your stories.

Will the reports of rudeness will beat last year?

We’ve got more bumper stickers waiting for you to share your story with us.

  1. WHERE'S THE FIRE? We've gotten a glimpse of things to come in our shop. Like the folks who are in such a rush to buy the things they'll need to relax, cell phone to ear, kids impatiently whining to get to the next thing, too frantic to wait for answers. It really is a bizarre and uniquely Hamptons phenomenon that for many to afford to live here on weekends to relax, they have to work like crazy in the city for 5 days to make the money to rush out in hours of traffic Friday nights only to rush around doing errands and work on the house for 2 days. In the blink of an eye it's time to do it all over again. Been there and did it, so not critical, just observing it from the other side. It makes one want to tell folks to try to relax upon arrival, or what's the point? I can't avoid a few observations of this starting to manifest on the road (specifically the Bridge/Sag Turnpike.) The speed limit is 35 from Montauk Hwy. to approximately the dump, then briefly goes up to 45, and down to 25 once approaching Sag Harbor. This road is often a place where deer, ducks, raccoon, squirrels, cats are crossing, dogs are roaming, baby deer frolicking into, people walking and biking along. Yet, people feel the need to speed and tailgate, only to stop at the traffic light. They pass me aggressively when I'm stopped in the road with EMERGENCY flashers on to get a dog to safety. Do people not wonder what emergency has a car stopped in the middle of the road with emergency flashers on? Could it be a child in the road...an old person with a walker trying to cross...am I, the driver, having a medical emergency? PEOPLE, REALLY, WHERE IS THE FIRE?

  2. You don't have to wait until summer. Or be a realtor. This morning we were driving on the back roads of Amagansett and some moron in a huge SUV, talking on a hand-held cellphone cut through the parking lot of the Old Stone Market and cut us off on the road. Idiots oblivious.

  3. The Hamptons wouldn't be what they are without the people that you complain about (or your property values for that matter) .... How ironic.

  4. I have to say, I agree with Thomas. My father summered in SH since he was 10 starting in 1941, his parents moved out permanentely, I summered for 6 years before moving out and going to school in SH and graduating. I now work in the city, my parents still live in SH and I rent in Sag Harbor. All you locals who waitress, bartend, work in Real Estate or any service industry would never survive w/o the "Summer Crowd".
Have you ever seen the houses, cars, planes and boats the Plumbers, and Electricians have out there!

  5. I was honked at waiting in line at the car wash!! Please people, enough. You are NOT paying our taxes, voting in our elections, helping at our shelters, cleaning our streets, parks, and beaches, answering emergency calls, teaching our children, etc., etc. Your are guests in our community. Show some respect!!!!

  6. They've started already, with the stupid parking lot bad behavior!
Hello!!!!! WHY are you in the fire zone? WHY are you going the wrong way in an aisle clearly marked with one-way arrows on the pavement? WHY are you HONKING at me, while I wait for someone to pull out of a space so I can pull in? WHY are you crawling up my @ss at 50 MPH on a local street where the speed limit is 25MPH? WHY are you trying to run me off the back roads in Northwest, where there is a DOUBLE yellow line (hello? NO PASSING - go back to Driver's Ed) on the narrow, curved streets, with deer and turkeys and raccoons? I'm NOT an old f@rt driving slowly because I'm OLD; I'm driving this way because it's the LAW, it's SAFE, and I LIVE here and know better. AAAUUUGH.

  7. Thomas & Suzie....
NO ONE is saying you/they shouldn't be here....It's simple...While the summer visitor's are here, Common courtesy, manners, some class...We are ALL human beings & Nobody is better than anyone else, regardless of how much money you possess. We ALL work our butts off & deserve the things we have, and we ALL deserve to enjoy the summer....

  8. So darling, why is that you decided to block two open parking spaces in your DOUBLE PARKED SUV at Twice Upon a Bagel? The road is barley wide enough for two way traffic anyway and you choose to sit half out in the northbound lane instead of pulling into either of two side by side empty spaces? Way to go cupcake!

  9. Of course it's a resort area, of course the service industry lives on it, but that doesn't mean that the visitors here shouldn't have common courtesy, or a little respect for the fact that their playground is our HOME. We're not complaining that they're here, we're complaining about the bad behaviour that they exibit!
I bring my own dogs to the beach all fall, winter & spring - when there are no other people to bother. My dogs are well behaved & friendly, but I still leave them at home when I think that their presence might in some way bother other's. Today I decided to bring my kids to the beach after school (left our dogs home), only to find that 2 other people had brought their very large dogs and proceeded to let them aggressively play all over the beach. The last straw was when the tumbling duo landed on ME. They were wet, sandy and stinky - and when I scrambled out of the way, they proceeded to wrestle on my blanket, with my keys and cell phone being tossed into the sand. The owners never even appologized - even when I quickly packed my things and announced to my kids that we were leaving because of the fighting dogs! What utter jerks!!!!

  10. I can't stand it! We're on a curvy backroad in Northwest Woods, hub and I on our bright red Vespa, and a Raymour and Flannigan delivery truck passes us on a hill on a curve across the double line and almost crashes into a van and a pile of cars that luckily STOPPED short in the opposite direction! GIVE US A BREAK ... we ALWAYS get out of the way of cars and trucks, but you have to give us a minute to find a place to PULL OVER first ........jeeeeeeeeeez.

  11. Thomas and SuzyQ...ya know...it's people like you that make people like US wish you'd all go away! We didn't ASK for you to come and take over our town, run our prices up sky high, ruin our waters so that we can't live off the bays and oceans any more, or give us jobs. Before you showed up with your rudeness, we were a happy community that supported ourselves and took care of each other. Nobody really needs your attitudes. They ruin OURS. We LIKE people...we just don't like the attitudes you bring with you. So, if you want to feel WELCOME, behave yourselves like good little children and stop thinking the world revolves around you and your big bucks.
